Mourning the murder of Charlie Kirk
Nick and I were picking out a paint color for our entryway when Nick glanced down at his phone. I watched horror wash over his face.
Charlie Kirk had been shot.
In the wake of Charlie's death, and as we reflect on the past tragedy of September 11th, we are devastated. We are simply heartbroken, and our prayers feel too small. Praise God that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, who died, was raised, and is sitting at the right hand of God - right now in this very moment - interceding for the Kirks, and for all of the children of God (Romans 8:33-35).
We live in a fallen world, surrounded by sin and evil. It feels like the reminders of that fact are becoming increasingly intense and frequent. And Satan, the prince of lies, would love nothing more than to use Charlie's murder to scare followers of Christ into silence and submission to the world. By God's grace, may this not be our response.
Tragic events are a potent reminder of the fleetingness of this life. And they're also a reminder of the meaninglessness of life... unless, by the grace of God, we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and present ourselves as a living sacrifice to Him. (Romans 12:1)
Charlie Kirk was the epitome of a strong and courageous Christian. His life was an example of putting on "the full armor of God" (Ephesians 6:10-18). In the wake of his death, may we:
Trust in God's sovereignty (Job 14:5)
Rest in God's goodness and faithfulness, even and especially in the midst of unthinkable tragedy (Romans 8:28)
Grow in our diligence to know God through hearing, reading, studying, and memorizing His inerrant Word (Ecclesiastes 12:13)
Tara Leigh Cobble's The Bible Recap is a great resource to jumpstart your reading. (We recommend the blue, imitation leather version... it's small and easy to carry around.)
Be steadfast in prayer, especially for Charlie's family - Erika and their two children - and his countless extended family and friends
In God's providence, I ordered this book on September 7th. Nick and I are using it as a resource to help us diligently pray for the Kirks.
And (what we normally talk about in this newsletter) steward the resources God entrusts to us to do more of what matters... to glorify Him and advance His Kingdom here on earth
We're currently reading and learning immensely from Randy Alcorn's Managing God's Money.
We praise God for the life and gifting of Charlie Kirk. We mourn living in a world without his continued, active influence. We weep for his wife and children, who will live this side of eternity as a widow and without their earthly father. We weep for those who have been in mourning since this day in 2001. And we take heart, because God the Father anointed His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, with the power of the Holy Spirit, and He has overcome the world (Luke 3:21-22, John 16:25-33).
Let us cling to Christ,
Nick and Hanna True
